What may have been the Doug Flutie/Gerard Phelan moment of Carmel Campus Flag Football may go down as the greatest play ever at Stevenson.
It all started with a defensive battle between the Dolphins of the International School of Monterey and the Pirates of the Stevenson School. The Pirates ran the ball well all game and were able to convert several first downs. The Dolphins had a series of productive passing plays over the middle and moved the ball down the field deftly.
But well after the sun had set, neither team could get the ball into the end zone.
With the score tied at zero and less than a minute remaining on the clock, the Dolphins faced fourth down and goal. Despite the darkness and low visibility, their quarterback dropped back to pass and chucked a ball towards the end zone. Amidst a sea of hands, the Pirates were able to knock the ball down . The turnover on downs gave the Pirates the ball with only 30 seconds left in the game.
Coach Klevan had her team prepared. She eschewed her remaining timeout in favor of one last play. The offense hustled onto the field, set up on the line with no huddle and prepared for their final chance.
Kira S. took the snap and dropped back to pass. Dolphin defenders surrounded her but she somehow launched the ball deep to the right side. Fauve K. reached where no other Dolphin could reach, snatched the ball out of the darkness and raced down the sidelines untouched. As time expired, the refs signaled a touchdown for the Pirates. Pirate parents, fans, coaches and players celebrated jubilantly.
If it wasn't the greatest play ever, it surely will be remembered for a long time. Well done, Pirates!
